Low Calorie Snacks

Eat Well, Stay Healthy

Getting or staying healthy contributes tremendously to our overall quality of life. What we eat, our level of physical activity, stresses are among the things that affect our health. The types of food we choose as meals and even snacks will play a leading role in the epic drama that is our lives. Not the case? You might be one of the few fortunate exceptions -for now- but you should expect changes at some point in life and takes steps today that will help you later on. Before we continue with this I should point out that there are many differing opinions on this subject. Some will disagree. Many experts have conflicting opinions. We are not presuming to be the authoritative source on the subject, rather it is our goal to raise awareness and hopefully encourage people to be pro-active about your health. If you would like to learn more about healthy eating we encourage you to research reliable sources like choosemyplate.gov which includes a full guide for eating healthy and tons of tips and suggestions.

Calories are a big topic these days. It's often an over-simplified topic and undoubtedly leads to a lot of uncertainty or misinformation. You will often hear "you need to consume less calories". That is not necessarily the case though. If you are extremely active, participate in sports, have a physically demanding job, have a high metabolism or any other excess demand of your body then lowering your calorie intake could could do more harm than good. In the simplest terms we can say calorie input should equal calories used. How do you come up with that magical number&ques; Don' over-complicate it. Have you been putting on weight over the last few moths&ques; Losing weight&ques; Staying level? There's your answer. Start slowly adjusting your food intake, activity level, or both, and track how your body is reacting. Be patient, you shouldn' expect changs overnight.

For everyone who is active, the only advice we will suggest for you is that your source of calories are benificial in other ways as well. Consume healthy calories that aren't empty of other nutrients your body needs to function at its best. And please have a slice of pie for me!

For the rest of us who are native to earth let's talk about how and when we consume calories and the effects it has. We need to eat, so please don't stop doing that. Preferably we should be eating three square meals a day and snacking between those meals to maintain a comfortable balance. Never too hungry or too full, the former often resulting in the latter due to overeating. Make healthy choices for meals. Pack a lunch you prepared at home so you know what went into it. Try to make your meals rather than buying premade processed foods. And always have a good selection of healthy snacks available. This is important and often the point where we make poor choices and break down. You probably won't find an apple in the vending machine and will have to choose between a mountain of sugar, a sea of salt and oil, or going hungry. Few of us will choose option number three.

Choosing Low Calorie Snacks

Having snacks available and in pre-portioned containers solves a lot of problems when it comes to making good snacking decisions. You won't always feel hungry at the same time so having something ready means not having to get whatever is available when hunger strikes. There are many options for healthy, low calorie snacks that will satisfy you that don't contain sugar, salt, oil, preservatives, saturated fats, and unpronounceable chemicals. Remember to change it up so your snacks don't get boring.

  1. Fruits and Vegetables
Any fruit or vegetable will do, fresh or dried. Apples and bananas are quick and convenient or you could cut up some carrots and celery and pack them in a reusable container. There is no wrong choice here.
  2. Nuts
A small bag of unsalted nuts on their own or mixed with dried fruit, seeds, popcorn and even a sprinkling of chocolate.
  3. Yogurt and Berries
Plain Greek yogurt is the preferred choice. Add mixed berries for a good dose of antioxidants and great taste.
  4. Whole Grain Crackers and Dips
Today you can find a good selection of healthy whole grain crackers at any supermarket. Hummus, guacamole, tzatziki are great low calorie dips but you'll find many more, including a selection of healthier dressings.

There are many other snack choices but you don't need an exhaustive list. Start with a few ideas and go from there. Healthy, natural foods taste great and will satisfy you. This doesn't mean giving up on packaged food however. Today more than ever, health-conscious food producers are introducing products that are healthy and completely free of harmful ingredients or processes. When choosing packaged food be diligent. Read the label, check the ingredients and nutritional facts and look for misleading labels or information.

We wish you the best in everything you do. We stand behind you and want to encourage a healthier, more fulfilling life for you and your loved ones.
